Finished my Fushigi Yugi re-read
Jul. 20th, 2021 12:04 pmOne thing without getting into spoilers: Tai-Yi showed Miaka a thing. Miaka didn't finish watching the thing and came to the wrong conclusion. Lots of drama could have been avoided if Tai-Yi had said anything about it.
The Universe of the Four Gods is Tai-Yi's favourite soap opera. * insert the "Prove me wrong" meme *
I had forgotten some things about the ending of the manga, mostly the mini-comic that the author included in this Kanzenban edition about how the manga was produced. I remembered that the last volumes felt weird and that they didn't really fit with the rest of the series. Yuu Watase comments in her mini-comic that the las volumes were meant to be longer and explore the rest of Suzaku's stars, but that the series were cancelled after the original anime ended.
Oh, and Miaka's tendency to end up naked? She says that that was her editor saying that she had to add fan service.
And I find hilarious that she doesn't like how she drew Fushigi Yugi anymore. Which makes sense, because from what I have been able to find, the Japanese edition of the Kanzenban came out in 2001, and the original manga ran from 1991 to 1996. 10 years after she started the manga, 5 years since she finished it!
Also, while trying to find out when the Kanzenban was originally published, I discovered that Yuu Watase apparently came out as a NB like 2 years ago*? Which I guess means the "Nuirko and all the gay/trans jokes" thing from the manga now have a different reading.
Wish I could read Japanese so I can read those tweets and whatever is in her blog.
*(She/Her in English, from what I found).
